FINAL STATS
TAMPA, FL – The Tulane baseball team jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third inning and that was more than enough for starter Dylan Carmouche and the Green Wave bullpen as the visitors claimed a 5-2 win over USF in the first game of the series between the two American Athletic Conference schools. The game was played at the USF Baseball Stadium in Tampa.
Â
The Olive and Blue moved to 9-21 overall and 3-1 in conference action with the win, while the Bulls dropped to 12-19 and 2-2 in the league.
Â
Carmouche (2-5) went seven innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits with eight strikeouts and just one walk. Closer Michael Lombardi nailed down his fourth save of the season, working around a pair of free passes in the ninth.
Â
USF starter Ethan Brown (1-3) went six and one-third innings in a losing effort and gave up all five runs on six hits with eight strikeouts and three walks.Â
Â
Tulane catcher Brennan Lambert had the biggest blow of the evening, clearing the bases in the top of the first inning with a three-run double to right. Third baseman Simon Baumgardt followed in the second with a solo home run to right in make it 4-0. Left fielder Jackson Linn capped the scoring in the third by crushing the first pitch he saw over the wall in left center for the Green Wave's fifth run.
Â
The home team battled back with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but that would prove to be the final margin.Â
Â
USF second baseman John Montes, the Bulls' leadoff hitter, had a game-high three hits.
Â
Lambert's double was his seventh of the season, a total that is tied with Brady Marget for the team lead.
Â
Linn's homer was also his seventh and that, too, leads Tulane. Baumgardt now sits second in that category with six.
Â
Green Wave center fielder Jared Hart stole his fourth base of 2023 in the seventh inning.
Â
The two teams go right back at it Friday afternoon for the series' second game. It is also scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET/5:30 CT.
