NEW ORLEANS – The NCAA released its 2023 Men's Tennis Championship bracket Monday evening and, in it, was Tulane making its 15th all-time appearance and sixth in the last seven years.
The 42nd-ranked Green Wave (15-12) will face 28th-ranked Middle Tennessee (21-7) in first round action at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre in Starkville, Mississippi on Friday at 11 a.m. CT.
The Blue Raiders, who are on a six-match win streak, won their fourth consecutive Conference USA title with a 4-0 victory over #41 UTSA and are also making their 15th appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
This will be the third time the two schools have met this season. MTSU knocked off Tulane 4-3 at the Blue Gray Invitational on February 24 in Montgomery, Alabama and the Green Wave responded with a 4-3 win of its own on March 5 at the City Park Tennis Center in New Orleans.
The pair also met in the first round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament with Tulane registering a 4-0 win in Oxford, Mississippi.
The winner will get Friday's winner of 15th-seeded Mississippi State (19-7) and Alabama State (11-11), a match that will not begin before 2 p.m., following the conclusion of Tulane-MTSU. The second round match will be played Saturday at 1 p.m. in Starkville.
Mississippi State defeated Tulane 4-3 in Starkville on February 3. The Bulldogs suffered an early exit in the SEC Tournament, dropping a 4-3 contest to #46 Alabama. The team was without its top singles and doubles competitor, Nemanja Malasevic, due to an injury that occurred during Wednesday's practice. Malesevic is ranked 80th nationally in singles and is one-half of the No. 57 and No. 81 doubles teams with Carles Hernandez and Michal Novansky, respectively.
Alabama State is on a seven-match win streak, one that culminated with back-to-back 4-0 wins over Alcorn State and Jackson State to take the SWAC title.
