On the final day of the Tulane Invitational, the Green Wave was bested by Houston Christian, 4-1.ย
Tulane was led offensively by freshman Avery Burks, and redshirt sophomore Ilayda Demirtas. The outside hitters both finished the match with 14 kills. Graduate outside hitter, Amarachi Osuji, followed closely behind finishing with 11 kills.ย
The Green Wave's defensive front had an outstanding performance in the match. Tulane finished with 18 total blocks. The blocking prowess was led by sophomore middle blocker, Sabrina Skyers. She finished with eight blocks, which was her season best. Graduate libero, Lauryn Burrows, also had an impressive match recording 20 digs.ย
The Green Wave and the Huskies were back and forth in a close first set. Houston Christian led Tulane 7-4 but the Green Wave answered to tie it up, 7-7. The Huskies continued to attack the Green Wave and led for the largest deficit the match saw, 18-14. However, Tulane did now show any quit and ended up taking the first set, 25-22.ย
Houston Christian entered the second set with vengeance. After the Huskies struck first, Tulane answered and tied up the score 2-2. However, Houston Christian scored four unanswered points to take the lead. For the remainder of the set Houston Christian led and defeated the Green Wave, 25-19.ย
The third set was dominated early by the Huskies. They went up to a quick 7-2 lead on the Green Wave. Tulane did not give up and continued to have answers for all of Houston Christian's points. However, the Huskies kept their foot on the gas and led for the remainder of the set by four or more points. Houston Christian took the set, 25-19.
The fourth set was a lot more back and forth than the previous two and consisted of 14 different ties. Houston Christian struck first, but a determined Tulane team always had answers. A kill from Demirtas tied the score at 23-23, but a service error and an attack error kept the Huskies from playing a fifth set. Tulane was defeated, 25-23.
The Green Wave will open up American Athletic Conference play on Wednesday when they travel to Tampa, Florida to take on USF.
