Tulane Falls To USF in Five Sets

TAMPA, FL - The Green Wave's volleyball team traveled to Tampa to take on USF in its conference opener. Tulane fell to the Bulls in a nail-biting five-setย match.
The Green Wave was led offensively by sophomoreย setter/right-side Katherine Crosley. Crosley finished the match with a career-high, 13 kills while hitting .545. Following closely behind was freshman outside hitter Avery Burks. Burks finished the match with 11 kills.ย
Defensively, the Green Wave had 15 total blocks. Freshman middle blocker Jordan White finished the match with a career-high eight assisted blocks and one solo block. Libero Lauryn Burrows finished with 24 digs which was one shy of her career best.ย
Tulane began the first set in a dominant fashion. It went up on a quick 7-0 run and maintained the lead for the remainder of the set. Despite a late comeback attempt from the Bulls, coming within three at 23-20, the Green Wave was able to claim the first set, 25-21.ย
The second set started off quite the opposite. Despite the Green Wave striking first, USF ran the score up to 7-2. Undiscouraged, Tulane was able to tie the game back at 12-12. For the remainder of the set, it was a back-and-forth battle between the Bulls and the Green Wave. In the end, USF came out on top, in a close 25-23 final score.ย
The third set began as the previous two sets were played. Once one team scored, the other had an answer until the score was 5-5. USF ended up going on a 5-0 run and led for the remainder of the set. USF took the set, 25-16.ย
The fourth set brought a nail-biter. Tulane claimed the first point of the set off of a service error, but every point had an answer. The set consisted of 14 different ties and no team led by more than three points. The Bulls held the largest lead of the match at 18-15, but after three unanswered Green Wave points, Tulane was back tied with USF. After more back and forth, an Ilayda Demirtas kill forced a fifth set by giving Tulane the victory (26-24).ย
Tulane was entering uncharted territory as it was the first match of the season that went to five sets. Tulane claimed the first two points but USF had answers and went on a 6-0 scoring run. The Bulls kept the momentum and claimed the set and the match, 15-9.ย
