
Swimming & Diving Off To Houston To Participate in Multiple Meets This Weekend

NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane swimming & diving team gets back in the pool this weekend as the program travels to Houston, Texas to take part in a pair of meets. The program takes on Rice on Friday at starting at 4 p.m. in an outdoor meet at the Aquatics Center Natatorium. The program then has a tri-meet against the University of Houston and LSU on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. at the CRWC Natatorium. The live stats for the meet can be followed on Meet Mobile, which is a subscription phone-only live stat app.

Last time out the team competed in a dual road meet against Liberty from Oct. 18-19. The program fell to the Flames 205.5 – 147.5, but in the two-day meet the Green Wave totaled seven event wins, 26 top-three finishes, 21 season bests, seven lifetime bests, six NIC Cuts or Open Water Qualifiers.
The event wins were Paige McKenzie (3M), Varvara Gkiouzepa Petropoulou (200 fly), Gwen Shahboz (200 IM and 200 breast), Andrea Zeebe (100 back and 400 IM) and Rafaela Sumida (200 free).
Zeebe was named the AAC's Swimmer of the Week after leading the program in the dual meet against Liberty. She contributed the most points on the team with victories in the 100 back (55.62) and the 400 IM (4:26.31). She also led off the second-place medley relay group (26.66 & 56.12). Additionally, she finished third in both the 200 free swimming with a lifetime best performance (1:52.29) and the 200 back (2:03.07) which she swam just five minutes after leading off the 400 relay. Zeebe is the second Tulane swimmer to be honored as the AAC's Swimmer of the Week this season following Catherine Russo. Overall, Zeebe is the fifth Tulane swimmer to be named the AAC's Swimmer of the Week (Catherine Russo – Oct. 22, 2024; Victoria Raymond – Oct. 10, 2023; Kate McDonald – Dec. 15, 2020 and Feb. 12, 2019 and Paris Zhang – Jan. 20, 2018). Her being named makes her the 12th different individual that has been named a conference swimmer of the week in the program's history along with Catherine Russo (2024 – AAC), Victoria Raymond (2023 - AAC), Kate McDonald (2020 & 2019 - AAC), Paris Zhang (2018 - AAC), Elizabeth Cook (2015 – CUSA), Mia Schachter (2014 – CUSA), Kayla Alf-Huynh (2011 x 2 – CUSA), Samantha Berdine (2005 – CUSA), Linda McEachrane (2004 – CUSA), Sarah Dicharry (2004 – CUSA) and Leslie Christian (2004 – CUSA).
Freshman Varvara Gkiouzepa Petropoulou was named the AAC Freshman Swimmer of the Week after helping lead Tulane in the dual meet against Liberty over the weekend from Oct. 18-19. The freshman standout swam her way to the victory in the 200 fly against the Flames (2:01.47). Her time currently leads the AAC and ranks her No. 7 all-time at Tulane in the event. She also finished second in the 100 fly with a lifetime-best performance (56.95). She is the first Tulane swimmer to ever be honored as the Freshman Swimmer of the Week as the 2024 season marks the first campaign that the award has been handed out.
Head Coach Amanda Caldwell is in her third year leading the program. The team is coming off an outstanding 2023-24 season that resulted in 64 lifetime bests, 31 all-time top-10 school marks, four school records, an AAC individual title, an AAC Freshman of the Year Award, 11 National Invite Championship Qualifiers, a Zone Diver Qualifier and an NCAA qualifier.
The program returns 13 swimmers & divers from last season in Anna Behrman, Emma Brady, Rachel Casebolt, Taylor Cekay, Grace Dale, Reese Dunkenberger, Paula Gaya Bisquerra, Olcaytu Hatipoglu, Paige McKenzie Sydney Mullin, Gwen Shahboz, Ece Tanriverdi and Andrea Zeebe. The squad also is welcoming in 11 newcomers in Layla Allen, Lise Coetzee, Charley Floyd, Phoebe Johnson, Varvara Gkiouzepa Petropoulou, Catherine Russo, Eva Shawver, Rafaela Sumida, Lily Von Herbulis, Kelsey Weddington and Maya Wilson.
Following the competitions in Houston, Tulane will next be in action from Nov. 21-23 in Cleveland, Ohio at the Magnus Cup in a meet hosted by Cleveland State. Tulane will next be at home on Jan. 25, 2025 for a dual meet against Little Rock. The team wraps up the home schedule and regular season by hosting West Florida on Feb. 1 at 1:30 p.m. The 2025 AAC Swimming Championship will be held from Feb. 19-22 in Dallas, Texas at SMU.
