
Swimming & Diving Has a Strong Dual Meet Against Rice

HOUSTON – The Tulane swimming and diving team had a strong dual meet against Rice on Friday evening as the program won three events, had 17 top-three finishes, 18 season bests and saw the team's 800m relay team qualify for the US Open Championships. In the meet the team fell to the Owls by a 145-98 score at the Rice Competition Pool.
"All in all a good night of competition," Head Coach Amanda Caldwell explained. "Our women stepped up in various ways, like coming out on top of some close races and our younger divers making great strides with significant improvements. Looking forward to a good night's sleep and step up for another day of competition as we prepare them for our midseason meet later this month."
The 800m relay team of the Maya Wilson, Rafaela Sumida, Phoebe Johnson and Lise Coetzee qualified for the US Open in the meet with a time of 7:32.99. The mark was a season-best and placed the group second overall in their event.
Gwen Shahboz earned a pair of victories on the day in the 200 IM with a season-best 2:04.09 and in the 200 breast with a season-best 2:18.48. She has now won a total of four individual events this season. Shahboz also took third in the 200 back with a season-best 2:04.01.
Catherine Russo earned the 50 free victory (23.67). It was her second event win in the 50 free this season.
Andrea Zeebe took second in the 200 IM (2:05.09) and the 200 back with a season-best 2:02.58.
Sumida was the runner-up in the 200 free (1:52.19).
Hatipoglu took second in the 50 free (24.09). The time was a season best.
Varvara Gkiouzepa Petropoulou finished second in the 200 fly (2:02.96). The time was also an NIC bonus cut.
Wilson earned second in the 100 free with a season-best 51.22.
Kelsey Weddington was second in in the 3-meter dive with 243.30 pts. Taylor Cekay placed second in the 1-meter dive with 244.43 pts. and third in 3-meter dive with a season-best 242.85.
Coetzee picked up a pair of third place finishes in the 1000 free (10:21.59) and the 500 free (5:04.53). Her 1000 free time was a season best.
