Tulane Finishes 8th at the AAC Indoor Championships

Birmingham, Alabama – A pair of medalists on Saturday helped Tulane land an eighth-place finish at the American Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Paula Vaquera and Janae Dean each landed on the podium for the Green Wave as Tulane ended the meet with 44 total points.
Vaquera and Dean joined Karlijn Schouten as All-Conference performers for the Wave over the weekend. Vaquera earned the silver medal in the 3000m with a time of 9:33.29. In the 800, Dean broke her own school record by crossing the finish line at 2:06.17 to pick up the bronze medal in the event. Schouten found the podium for Tulane on Friday in the pole vault as she had a jump of 3.98/13'00.75" which earned her the bronze medal.
Danna Diaz put points on the board for the Wave in two events on Saturday. She started by finishing fourth in the mile with a time of 4:52.26. Diaz then capped her solid performance from the weekend by landing seventh in a competitive field for the 3000m crossing the finish at 9:36.49.
Joining Dean with a point-scoring performance in the 800m was Elena Rengel-Liano with a fourth-place finish in the event. She crossed the finish line with a final time of 2:10.52.
Kaia Todd continued her stellar weekend by setting another personal record in the triple jump. After setting a new personal record to qualify for the finals of the event she broke that record again on her final jump to earn seventh place with a 12.30m leap. Todd ended the meet with six new personal bests including the 60m hurdles (8.94), 800m (2:34.34), long jump (5.45m), shot put (11.34m), and pentathlon (3543 points).
Running in the 3000m with Vaquera and Diaz were Sophia McNerney and Gemma Rebollo. McNerney took 12th in the race with a time of 9:45.50 while Rebollo crossed 43rd at 10:19.27.
The 4x400m relay team of Laura Fodor, Alyssa Taylor, Liano, and Dean earned 11th in their event with 3:49.30.
Next, Tulane will prepare to open the outdoor track and field season on March 15-16. The Green Wave will start the 2024 outdoor campaign at the Louisiana Classics hosted by Louisiana-Lafayette.
