Green Wave Falls in Four at Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. โ Tulane volleyball (9-5, 1-2) dropped its first road American Conference bout of the season falling 1-3 at Charlotte (12-3, 3-1) on Friday night. The Green Wave tallied 85 digs as a team in the match to mark the fifth time it has eclipsed 80 this season and set a season-high in league play.
Following the loss, the Wave fell to 1-2 in true road contests this season. Meanwhile, the 49ers improved 4-1 at home on the season with four-straight wins in Halton Arena.
Avery Burks led the Tulane offensive attack as the only player to finish with double figures in kills. She finished the match with 13 kills to go with 11 digs to register her eighth double-double of the season.
Defensively, Ava Derbes led the Green Wave in digs setting a career-high with 19 in the four-set battle. She also recorded seven kills and a pair of blocks against the 49ers. Ashley Sturzoiu and Piper Mickenheim both followed with 10 digs of their own which also marked a career-best for both players.
Tulane claimed the initial advantage in the opening set before surrendering six-straight points to allow Charlotte to pull in front. The Wave went on to trail the remainder of the set ultimately falling 20-25.
After a tight back-and-forth to begin the second set, a 4-1 scoring run helped the Green Wave take control of the lead 10-7. Tulane never let the 49ers climb back in front holding its largest leads at 16-12 and 19-15 before winning the set 25-23.
The Wave was unable to hold onto the momentum to begin the third set as Charlotte took the early lead. Tulane battled to pull the score to a tie at 17-17 but was unable to pull in front as it went on to drop the set 22-25.
In the fourth set the Green Wave could not hold off the final push of the 49ers falling 9-25 in the set to drop the match 1-3.
UP NEXT
Tulane will make the trek over to Greenville, North Carolina, to complete its road trip against East Carolina on Sunday, October 5. The match between the Green Wave and the Pirates is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. CT.
