Tulane Drops Road Battle at East Carolina

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Tulane volleyball (9-6, 1-3) fell on the road Sunday afternoon 0-3 to the East Carolina Pirates (9-6, 1-3) inside Minges Coliseum. Three players for the Green Wave recorded career-highs in the match led by Lily Wedman who posted a career-best 25 assists.
Following the loss, the Wave drops to 1-3 in true road contests this season. Meanwhile, the Pirates improved to 2-0 at home on the season including 1-0 in league play.
Avery Burks led all players in the match with 12 kills to mark her 14th performance of the year with double figures in kills. She also tallied 10 digs in the contest to register her ninth double-double of the season.
The pairing of Lauryn Mack and Sabrina Skyers each added seven kills against East Carolina while Ashley Sturzoiu posted a career-highs with 10 digs and three kills.
Piper Mickenheim was the third player on the roster to notch a career high in the match. The freshman finished the contest with a career-best 12 digs and four assists.
A tightly contested first set saw the Wave and the Pirates meet in a tie four times before Tulane took its first lead of the day 12-11. The Green Wave did not maintain the advantage long as ECU mounted an 8-2 run to climb back in front. Tulane pulled back within one point on a couple of occasions down the stretch, but could not complete a comeback dropping the set 21-25.
After scoring the first point of the second set Green Wave battled from behind for the remainder of the set. Tulane pulled the score to a tie with the Pirates five separate times during the set with the final tie coming at 17-17. Unfortunately, the Wave was never able to gain the advantage over ECU eventually falling 20-25 in the second set.
Tulane responded with some fight to open the third set jumping on the Pirates to take an early 4-1 advantage. The Wave continued to stay in front of the Pirates until ECU scored seven unanswered points to put Tulane behind 14-19. The Green Wave battled to pull back within two points at 22-24 but ultimately could not survive to force another set losing 22-25 in the third.
UP NEXT
The Wave will return home to continue conference play hosting North Texas and South Florida inside Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse. Tulane will square off against the Mean Green on Friday, October 10, at 6:30 p.m. before facing the Bulls on Sunday, October 12, at 1 p.m.
