Tulane Tops FAU 83-76 to Advance to AAC Semifinals

FORT WORTH, Texas – A 15-4 scoring run to close the game delivered four seed Tulane men's basketball (19-13) to an 83-76 victory over five seed Florida Atlantic (18-15) on Friday in the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference Championship. The Green Wave held the Owls without a field goal in the final 4:51 to secure the comeback win and advance to the semifinals of the AAC Championship for the fourth time.
Five players posted double figures in scoring as the Wave eclipsed the 80-point mark for the 13th time this season. Asher Woods paced Tulane with his third-straight 20-point performance as he finished with 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting.
The duo of Kaleb Banks and Gregg Glenn III followed with 17 points each while Rowan Brumbaugh added 15. Brumbaugh also tallied a team-high seven assists to go with six rebounds. Mari Jordan rounded out the top scorers for the Green Wave providing 10 points and a team-best eight rebounds off the bench.
Defensively, Tulane held FAU to 36.2 percent shooting from the field and just 27.3 percent from beyond the arc.
The showdown started as a back-and-forth affair in the first half as the Wave and the Owls traded the lead five times in the opening five minutes. Tulane claimed control of the advantage a few moments later with a 7-0 run to take a 23-17 lead.
However, the lead didn't last long for the Green Wave as FAU battled back to build a seven-point advantage with 4:58 to play. Tulane answered to close the opening half strong scoring 12 unanswered points to take a 37-32 lead into the break.
The Green Wave extended its advantage to as many as nine points in the first few minutes of the second half. Tulane maintained the lead through the first 10-plus minutes of the frame until FAU reclaimed the advantage 62-61 with 9:02 to play.
Tulane briefly took the lead again at 65-64, but it didn't last as the Owls responded to take a 72-68 advantage with 4:51 on the clock. After FAU took the lead, the Wave locked in defensively to close the contest. The Green Wave held the Owls without a field goal the final goal the final 4:51 while mounting a 15-4 scoring run to win the game 83-76.
Up next, Tulane will face the No. 1 seed the 16th-ranked Memphis Tigers in the AAC Championship semifinals on Saturday in Fort Worth, Texas. Tipoff between the Green Wave and the Tigers is set for 2 p.m. from Dickies Arena on ESPN2
