
Baseball Stands Strong In Ninth For 3-2 Win over Long Beach State

LONG BEACH, CA – The Tulane baseball team (9-3) ended the team's California road trip on a positive note with a 3-2 victory over Long Beach State (5-7) on Monday night at Blair Field.
The game was decided in the ninth inning as the Dirtbags rallied for a pair of runs on the bases loaded single from Luke Taylor before Michael Lombardi closed the door on the rally with a pair of strikeouts with two runners on.
J.D. Rodriguez (1-0) started and pitched well in allowing one hit in five scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Blaise Wilcenski threw three scoreless innings in relief with two strikeouts. Carter Benbrook was unable to record an out in the ninth inning and surrendered two runs. Tayler Montiel struck out the only batter he faced. Lombardi earned his third save of the season with back-to-back strikeouts with a pair of runners on base in the ninth. The loss went to Long Beach State's Ka'imi Kahalekai (0-2) who allowed one run in three innings.
Gavin Schulz led the attack for Tulane with a pair of hits plus a walk and a run scored. Tanner Chun, Lombardi, Connor Rasmussen, Matthias Haas, Kaikea Harrison, Nate Johnson and James Agabedis III all had a hit in the game for the Green Wave. The RBIs came from Harrison, Johnson and Agabedis.
Tulane scored first with a run in the first as Harrison roped a double to the corner in right to score Chun from second base.
The Green Wave added a run to the lead on a Nate Johnson's single to plate Gavin Schulz in the fourth.
Agabedis drove in a big insurance run in the eighth inning with his pinch hit RBI through the left side to plate Harrison.
Next, Tulane returns home to host North Dakota State from March 7-9 starting on Friday at 6:30 p.m. on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Notables
The win made Tulane 4-3 all-time against Long Beach in the first game between the schools since 2018…The program also improved to 20-48 all-time against schools from the Big West Conference.
