Green Wave Topples Tritons to Close Ed Collins Classic

SAN DIEGO – Tulane men's tennis bounces back with a 4-1 victory over UC San Diego on Sunday to wrap up the weekend at the Ed Collins Classic in San Diego. The Green Wave jumped out to the early advantage for the second match in a row and this time held on to seal the deal to finish the weekend 1-2 with the win over the Tritons.
With the loss the Wave improved to 3-8 overall while UC San Diego dropped to 4-8 on the season.
For the second day in a row Tulane opened the match by taking the doubles point over the Tritons. The duo of Luka Petrovic and Alec Gaudin got the winning ways started for the Wave with a 6-3 victory on court two in doubles play. Hady El Kordy and AJ Mercer followed with a 7-5 win on court three to secure the doubles point and give Tulane the 1-0 lead heading into singles.
This time the Green Wave managed to maintain the momentum from doubles as singles action started. Gaudin stepped up on court five to extend the lead to 2-0 for Tulane by winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. The lead quickly grew to 3-0 for the Wave as Asaf Friedler picked up the two-set win on court four 6-3, 6-2. UCSD got on the board with a win on court two, but that did not slow down Tulane. El Kordy clinched the 4-1 win for the Green Wave winning in two sets on court three 6-4, 6-3.
Up next, Tulane will return home to host a doubleheader on Friday, March 14, at City Park Tennis Center. The Wave will square off with a pair of in-state foes starting against UNO at 11 a.m. followed by a match against Nicholls at 3 p.m.
