NEW ORLEANS – At the 14th International Friendship Youth Bowling Championship in Doha, Qatar, Valeria Colon and Juanelyz Solla represented Puerto Rico across four days of different competitions. Colon highlighted the Tulane duo's performances by claiming bronze in the doubles competition before advancing to the masters rounds, placing ninth.
Â
The annual friendly event is hosted by the Qatar Bowling Federation (QBF) and took place across four days beginning on Wednesday, February 11, and wrapping up today, Saturday, February 14. Puerto Rico was one of 13 total nations to participate in the event with Solla and Colon making up half of the Puerto Rican quartet as representatives of the No. 17 Tulane bowling program.
Â
The first day of competition featured the individual rounds, and Thursday's action saw the doubles portion of the tournament. In doubles, Colon teamed with Stephanie Rivera to total 2,533 pins en route to a third-place finish. They were just 62 pins behind the gold medalists, a team from Singapore that posted a score of 2,595.
Â
The team event was held on Friday, and Saturday saw the masters portion. With her bronze medal from the doubles event, Colon advanced to the masters competition and posted a pin total of 3,092 for an average of 206.13 per game. Colon was one of 20 bowlers to advance to the masters portion, and despite falling just short of the cut line for stage two (top eight advance), she still earned a top-10 result by finishing ninth.
Â
After returning from Qatar, Colon and Solla will rejoin the 17th-ranked Green Wave for the TNBA Open in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Hosted by The National Bowling Association, the three-day competition begins on Friday, February 27, and concludes on Sunday, March 1.
