Tulane Outlasts UTSA to Win League Opener

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – In a highly contested five-set battle to begin American Conference action Tulane volleyball (9-2, 1-0) defeated UTSA (9-3, 0-1) 3-2 on the road Friday night. The Green Wave leaned on its success attacking in the middle to claim the victory as middle blockers Riley Tucker and Maddy McLin recorded double digit kills.

With the win, the Wave secured its fifth consecutive victory and moved to 3-0 in road matches this season. The victory also improved Tulane's record to 6-8 against the Roadrunners and marked its first win in San Antonio since 2024.

The offensive attack for the Green Wave was clicking throughout the match as five different players recorded double digit kills. Avery Burks led the way with a season-high 18 kills on a .485 hitting percentage. She also posted 13 digs and a career-best four aces. The other leading contributors for the Tulane offense were Chloe List with 14 kills, Maddy McLin with 12, and Riley Tucker and Lauryn Mack with 10 each.

Charlee Solomon continued her stellar play facilitating the offense for the Wave this season as she matched her career-high with 56 assists in the five-set win. She previously recorded 56 assists last season for Jacksonville State against Missouri State on October 10, 2025. Solomon also added 11 digs, five total blocks, and three kills to her stat sheet in the victory.

Defensively, the Green Wave was active all over the floor. On the backline Makena Lim paced three players with double digit digs by posting 19. She was followed by Burks with 13 and Solomon with 11. Meanwhile, at the net Tulane recorded eight blocks as a team. Tucker and Solomon led the way with five block assists each while List added two block assists and one solo block and McLin chipped in two block assists.

The match got off to a competitive start as the Wave and the Roadrunners traded the lead eight times in the opening set. Tulane and UTSA traded points throughout the set until the Green Wave made the first push to take control with an 8-4 run to pull in front 15-11.

Following the media timeout the advantage for the Green Wave slowly dwindled until the two teams were tied again at 19-19. The action then went back and forth between Tulane and the Roadrunners, but the Wave was able to make the final push to claim the set 26-24.

In the second set the Roadrunners quickly flipped the momentum away from Tulane. Despite trailing by as many as seven points during the set the Wave never stopped battling eventually pulling within three at 16-19. However, the comeback for the second set was not to be for the Green Wave as it fell 20-25.

Tulane bounced back in the third set to jump in front early following a brief back-and-forth to begin the action. The Wave mounted a 9-1 run to claim a 13-7 advantage and never looked back.

The lead eventually grew to as many as nine points (22-13) for the Green Wave during the third set. UTSA made a brief attempt to climb back into the action but kills from Burks and McLin closed the door for a 25-18 win for Tulane.

The Wave and the Roadrunners were deadlocked throughout the fourth set as the two teams met in a tie score 17 separate times. Eventually, Tulane had a chance to close out the match after taking a 25-24 lead, UTSA refused to go down scoring the final three points to win 27-25 and force a fifth set.

In the final set of the match the Green Wave responded quickly to the fight from the Roadrunners. Tulane jumped out to a 5-1 advantage and continued to keep the pressure extending its lead to 10-4. After the Roadrunners scored once List sparked a 5-0 run for the Wave to close out the set 15-10 and secure the 3-2 match victory.

Tulane will journey over to Denton, Texas, to face North Texas on Sunday, September 27. The match between the Green Wave and the Mean Green is slated to start at 1 p.m.
