Returning for his second season as an assistant coach with the Green Wave program, Matthew Boggs will once again be responsible for working with the outfielders, assisting with hitters and coaching first base. In his first season at Tulane, Boggs helped guide outfielders Matt Barket and Brian Bogusevic to All-America campaigns, and his hitting assistance helped the Green Wave post the sixth-most hits and ninth-highest batting average in school history. Boggs joined the Tulane family in August 2003 after spending the previous season at Georgia Southern. At GSU, Boggs worked primarily with the catchers, and his battery helped the Eagles finish third in the nation in strikeouts and advance to the championship game of the Southern Conference Tournament. Under Boggs[apos] tutelage, Eagles catcher A.J. Zickgraf threw out a league-leading 31 baserunners, held opponents to a .465 success rate in stolen bases, and earned SoCon Player of the Week honors on April 16, 2003. A four-year starter at Georgia Tech where he saw time in the infield and outfield from 1998-2002 (he received a medical-redshirt in 2000), Boggs was a noted leadoff hitter and compiled a career on-base percentage of .463. Known to have an exceptional eye at the plate, Boggs tallied 135 walks while striking out just 98 times in 772 career at-bats. He was also a versatile student-athlete, seeing time at third base as well as in the outfield. Although he hit better than .300 in each of his four seasons in Atlanta, Boggs saved his best season for last as he hit .363 with a career-best 12 doubles, two triples and 43 RBI in 2002 while helping Georgia Tech advance to the College World Series. Voted team captain as a junior and senior, he finished his career with a .337 batting average with 32 doubles, 110 RBI and 41 stolen bases. A standout off the field as well, Boggs was a four-time ACC Honor Roll student, claimed Verizon District III Academic All-America honors in 1999, 2001 and 2002, and as a senior, earned national second-team Academic All-America recognition. A native of Dalton, Ga., Boggs completed his bachelor[apos]s degree in textile and fiber engineering from Georgia Tech in 2001, and enrolled in graduate school during his final season of eligibility.
