Women's Cross Country Finishes In Eighth

AUBURN, Ala. - Tulane women's cross country runner Hanne Lyngstad topped a field of 243 runners in winning the Auburn Bank Cross Country Invitational Friday evening. Her efforts helped the Green Wave women to an eighth-place finish in the 30-team event.
Lyngstad, a junior from Elverum, Norway, equaled her own school record in winning the 5,000-meter race in a time of 16:49.97. Her time was more than 11 seconds faster than the next closest finisher. It was her second win in two meets this season. Incidentally, Lyngstad originally set the school on the same Auburn University course last season.
As a team, the Tulane women posted a strong eighth-place finish with 227 points. Michigan State won the team event with a total of 73.
The Green Wave women displayed quite a bit of depth as five runners finished in the top half of the field. Also posing solid finishes were Theresa Maru (28th/17:39.14), Katrina Gemmell (44th/18:00.12), Hanna Ritakallio (75th/18:36.86), Lyndie Galka (95th/18:52.42), Angela Milner (161st/20:15.93) and Lana Garner (164th/20:21.23).
On the men's side, Solomon Kandie earned his second straight top-10 finish, as the freshman finished eighth in the 8,000-meter race in a time of 24:48.75. His time was 32 behind South Alabama's David Kimani, who won the race in a time of 24:16.59.
The Tulane men earned an 18th-place finish in the 33-team field with 492 points. Princeton won the team event with a score of 85.
Also finishing for Tulane was Peter Rotich (65th/26:03.84), Meshack Mulupi (143rd/27:26.27), Meyer Friedman (151st/27:34.40), Mark Williams (193rd/28:32.40), and Anthony Lagat (214th/29:08.75).
The Tulane cross country teams will next be in action on Saturday, Oct. 9, at the LSU Invitational in Baton Rouge, La.
