NEW ORLEANS - Tulane pitcher Jared Berkowitz and catcher Chad Sutter have been named Conference USA Baseball Pitcher and Hitter of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Berkowitz also received Louisiana Sports Writers Association Player of the Week honors.
On Saturday, Berkowitz pitched his first career shutout against conference rival Houston, posting a 4-0 win. Through nine innings of work, Berkowitz allowed just two hits, struck out 10 batters, and did not give up a walk. He pitched a perfect 4 1/3 innings before giving up his first hit. With a 9-2 record, Berkowitz is undefeated in Conference USA play (5-0), and leads the conference with nine victories. Through 80 innings of work, Berkowitz has struck out 62, walked 14, pitched three complete games and has an overall ERA of 3.26.
For the week, Sutter hit .636 (7-for-11) and recorded a slugging percentage of 1.55. Against LSU, Sutter went 3-for-4 with two home runs and a game-high five RBI. He holds the Tulane triple-crown, as he leads the team in batting average (.422), RBI (56), and home runs (15).
