Men's Cross Country Finishes 29th at NCAA Championships

Lawrence, Kansas-The Tulane men's cross country team finished it's most successful season ever with a 29th place finish at the 1998 NCAA Cross Country Championships held Monday at Rim Rock Farm.
The Green Wave men, making its first-ever appearance at the NCAA Championships, finished 29th in the 31-team field. Tulane compiled a team score of 682, trailing Arkansas, who won the event with a score of 97. It closes a season that saw the team win four team championships, six individual titles, and become the first Conference USA team to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Leading the way for the Green Wave was Amos Kipyegon. The senior from Eldoret, Kenya, finished 41st among 250 runners, with a 10,000-meter time of 31:16.00. Kipyegon, the two-time Conference USA individual champion, has been the team's top finisher in all eight events this season. Adam Goucher of Colorado won the individual title in a time of 29:26.90.
Also competing for Tulane was Jacob Busienei, 32:42.10 (148th); Peter Rotich, 33:24.20 (196th); Eric Thronson, 33:44.70 (213th); Andrew Lilly, 34:07.40 (227th); Adam Moskowitz, 35:31.20 (246th) and Cameron Brown, 35:32.80 (247th).
On the women's side, Tulane's Hanne Lyngstad finished 58th in the women's 5,000-meter championship race. The sophomore from Elverum, Norway, is the first woman in school history to qualify for the national championship. Lyngstad, the 1998 Conference USA individual champion, was the Green Wave's top finisher in all seven races in which she competed. It was her first season of cross country competition.
Villanova won the team championship with a score of 106. Katie McGregor of Michigan won the individual title with a time of 16:47.21.
Coached by Ron Bazil, Tulane is the first Conference USA school to send competitors to both the men's and women's national championship meet in the same season.
