CHICAGO - On the heels on two outstanding performances last weekend, the Tulane cross country program swept the Conference USA Athlete-of-the-Week honors, the league announced Tuesday.
Hanne Lyngstad, a junior from Elverum, Norway, earned the award after winning the Popeye's Ragin' Cajun Invitational Saturday in Lafayette, La., in her first meet of the year. Her three-mile time of 16:47.62 was a new school record and nearly 45 seconds faster than the next-closest finisher. She led Tulane to its first team title of the season and a sweep of the event's top three individual places.
On the men's side, Solomon Kandie, a freshman from Nairobi, Kenya, garnered the award after winning the men's four-mile race at the Popeye's Ragin' Cajun Invitational Saturday in Lafayette, La., in his first collegiate event. His time of 19:43.24 topped the field by more than 28 seconds and was the third-fastest four-mile time in school history. His efforts helped the Green Wave to its best team finish of the season.
It was the third time this season a Tulane runner has been named C-USA Athlete-of-the-Week. Incidentally, it was the seventh time in her career that Lyngstad has been so honored by the league office, and the first for Kandie.
Tulane will next be in action on Friday, Oct. 1, as the squad is scheduled to compete at the Auburn Bank Invitational in Auburn, Ala.
