Baseball Downs SDSU In Season Opener

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Freshman Beau Hearod propelled Tulane (1-0) past San Diego State (5-3) with two doubles and three RBI, as the Green Wave went on to beat the Aztecs 4-2 in their season opener Friday evening.
Tulane pitcher Henry Bonilla went 8 1/3 innings against SDSU before being replace by closer Brandon Belanger in the ninth. After beginning the game by striking out the side, Bonilla (1-0) went on to record 12 strikeouts. Belanger posted his first save of the season and struck out one of the two batters he faced.
The Aztecs jumped on the board first as Garrett Cook hit his first homerun of the season, a solo over the right field fence, in the top of the fifth to put SDSU up 1-0. Tulane answered in the sixth with an RBI double by Hearod who then scored on an error by SDSU second baseman Matt Ricardy to give the Wave a 2-1 advantage. Hearod secured the Tulane win with a two run double in the seventh. Ricardy drove in a run in the seventh but the Wave held on to the win the game 4-2.
For the Wave, Hearod went 3-for-4 with a game high three RBI. Designated hitter Matt Groff was 2-for-3 with one run scored.
John Skinner took the loss for San Diego State and dropped to 0-2 on the season.
The teams play the second of a three game series on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Turchin Stadium.
