Tulane Baseball Falls To Nicholls State, 9-8

THIBODAUX, La. - Despite an 8-3 lead heading in to the seventh inning, the Tulane baseball team fell to Nicholls State 9-8 on Tuesday evening.
The Green Wave hit a season high eight doubles and 12 hits but couldn't fight off the Colonels' late game rally. Nicholls State closed in on a Tulane 8-3 lead in the seventh as Doug Gill hit a three-run home run to come within one run of the Wave. The Colonels took the lead on a Rondon Anderson RBI infield single, securing the NSU 9-8 victory.
Green Wave starting pitcher Nick Bourgeois went six innings, struck out nine, walked one, gave up eight hits, six runs, four earned. Closer Brandon Belanger (0-2) recorded his second loss of the season as he went 2/3 innings gave up one run.
For Tulane Mickey McKee went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two runs. Designated hitter Steve Shirley was 3-for-4 with a game high three RBI, two doubles and one run.
Nicholls State's leading hitter was Gill who was 2-for-4 with two runs three RBI, a triple and a home run. Alex Valezquez (1-0) picked up his first win of the season going two scoreless innings.
Tulane travels to Tucson, Ariz., for a three game series against the Wildcats of Arizona. The Wave plays on Friday at 4:00 p.m., Saturday at noon and Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday's game are scheduled to be broadcast on 88.3 FM WRBH and over the internet.
