MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Sterling Davis scored 16 points and Trello Galloway had 11 of his 13 in the second half Thursday as Tulane beat Houston 76-69 for its first victory ever in the Conference USA tournament.
Davis was among five players in double figures as No. 4 seed Tulane (20-9) finally advanced to the semifinals. Tulane will play Saint Louis, an upset winner over No. 1 Cincinnati, on Friday.
Houston (9-22) had four players in double figures led by Chad Hendrick's 18 points and 17 by Kenny Younger. George Williams and Gee Gervin added 13 each for the Cougars. But it wasn't enough.
Tulane, which led 38-37 at the half, built its lead thanks to Galloway who keyed a 10-2 spurt for a 50-42 lead. The Green Wave took its biggest lead when Dylan Osean connected on a 3-pointer with 7:07 remaining at 64-52.
But the Cougars answered with an 8-0 spurt to cut the advantage to 64-60, the final points coming on a pair of free throws by Younger with 3:53 left in the game.
The Green Wave, which had trouble connecting on free throws while Houston was making its run, converted 9-of-14 from the line in the final 3:32 to seal the victory.
Houston could get no closer than four down the stretch.
Osen finished with 13 points for Tulane, while Morris Jordan had 12 and Ledaryl Billingsley came off the bench for 11.
