
Tulane Baseball Rally Falls Short, 9-8, At UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Despite a late game four run rally the Tulane Green Wave dropped a 9-8 decision to UAB on Sunday afternoon.
The loss marked the first time in 15 meetings the Wave has been defeated by the Blazers and snapped a nine game Conference USA win streak.
Tulane put up four runs in the first inning to take an early 4-0 lead but the Blazers went on to score nine runs through four innings. Tulane's Andy Cannizaro and Nick Herz scored a pair of runs in the sixth to close in on UAB, 9-6. In the eighth, Jake Gautreau sent in two runs with one out but a Blazer double play ended Tulane's attack.
The winning pitcher was Lee Jolly (2-1) who went seven innings gave up six runs and struck out a game high five. UAB's Scott Beyer picked up his second save of the season.
Tulane's Matt Foster got the loss after replacing starting pitcher Henry Bonilla in the third. Foster gave up four hits three runs through 2 1/3 innings of work. Brandon Belanger finished the game, going the final 3 2/3 innings. He gave up two runs struck out four and walked no one.
For the Wave, Steve Shirley was 2-for-4 with three RBI and his seventh home run of the year. Mickey McKee and Jake Gautreau each sent in a pair of runs.
UAB's Dan DeMent was 3-for-5 with four RBI.
Tulane hosts LSU on Wednesday evening at Zephyr Field. First pitch is 7:05 p.m.
