NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Tulane (27-15-1, 12-3-1 C-USA) pitcher Jared Berkowitz recorded his fourth complete game of the season as the Green Wave defeated UNC Charlotte (23-19-1, 8-7 C-USA) 8-3 on Friday evening.
Berkowitz (10-1) scattered seven hits over nine innings en route to his 10 win of the season. With the win, he now leads Conference USA in this category. Berkowitz struck out seven walked three and gave up three runs, one earned.
Costly Tulane errors allowed the 49ers to take a 3-2 lead after an inning and a half of play. The Green Wave tied it up in the bottom of the second as James Jurries doubled down the right field line allowing Nick Herz to score.
Tulane's Steve Shirley singled up the middle in the fifth to give the Wave the go ahead run. Berkowitz held UNCC scoreless through the last sixth innings of play while the Wave scored four unanswered runs to secure an 8-3 victory.
Green Wave third baseman Jake Gautreau was 2-for-4 with one run scored and a pair of RBI. Matt Groff also sent in two runs as he went 1-for-5.
UNCC's Brion Treadway (9-3) got the loss as he went 5 1/3 innings gave up eight runs walked eight and struck out four.
The teams play game two on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
