Tulane Baseball Sweeps Saint Louis With 13-9 Win

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Green Wave (23-12-1, 9-2-1 C-USA) completed a three game sweep of Conference USA rival Saint Louis (12-19, 3-9 C-USA) with a 13-9 win on Sunday afternoon.
On the afternoon, Tulane's Steve Shirley was 3-for-5 with six RBI, a double and a pair of runs scored. Shirley recorded two home runs, his second multiple home run game of the season. The six runs driven in by Shirley marks a career high.
The Billikens held a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the first, but a Steve Shirley three run homer gave the Wave a 3-1 advantage. An aggressive Saint Louis offense scored a pair of runs off starting TU pitcher Matt Foster to take a 4-2 lead after three innings.
Foster was replaced in the third as he went 2 1/3 giving up five hits and four runs. Brandon Belanger (2-2) went on to stun the Billikens and held them scoreless through 5 2/3 innings. He scattered three hits and struck out three.
The Green Wave bats came alive in the sixth allowing them to snuff SLU's lead as Tulane scored a season high eight runs, including back-to-back home runs by Jake Gautreau and Shirley. Contributing to the Wave rally by driving in runs were James Burgess, Mickey McKee and Andy Cannizaro.
Saint Louis attempted a come back in the ninth as they scored five runs, but the Wave came out on top with a 13-9 victory.
Zach Placzek (2-2) got the loss for Saint Louis. He went 5 1/3 gave up eight hits, six runs and struck out one. SLU's Jim Bredenkoetter and Adam Shea each drove in two runs.
Tulane plays cross-town rival UNO on Tuesday, April 9 at Zephyr Field. First pitch is 6:30 p.m.
