
Tulane Baseball Drops First C-USA Tournament Game To UAB

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Tulane (37-19-1) baseball team suffered a 11-4 loss to UAB (27-30)in the first round of the 2000 Conference USA Tournament on Wednesday.
This is the first time Tulane has lost a first round Conference USA Tournament game.
The Green Wave jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the second but a shaky defense allowed the Blazers to score six runs, one earned, in the fourth. UAB outscored Tulane 5-2 through the last four innings and defeated the Wave 11-4.
Lee Jolly (4-3) pitched a complete game and picked up the fourth win of the season. Through nine innings he scattered nine hits, gave up four runs and walked four.
Green Wave starting pitcher Barth Melius (5-4) got the loss. He went 4 2/3 innings gave up six hits one earned run and struck out two.
Tulane's Matt Groff was 2-for-4 with a team high two RBI. Andy Cannizaro and Steve Shirley also sent in runs for the Wave.
UAB's Will Simth 2-for-6 with a pair of runs scored and two RBI.
Tulane plays either Southern Miss or Cincinnati Thursday morning at 8:00 a.m. CST.
