
Tulane Knocks Off UAB, 74-67

Tulane's Sarah Goree set a career high with 22 points and Taryn Turnbull added 14 as Tulane defeated UAB 74-67 in Conference USA women's basketball action in Bartow Arena, Sunday afternoon.
The win overshadowed UAB's Deanna Jackson's performance of 27 points, nine rebounds and a career high seven assists. It was the most points Jackson had scored since the Conference USA opener, Dec. 31 against Memphis, when she scored 35 points.
Tulane (12-6, 6-1)jumped on UAB early, leading 25-7 after the first 7 1/2 minutes of the game. The Lady Blazers bounced back, outscoring Tulane 17-3 over the next eight minutes to cut the lead to 28-24. The Green Wave finished off the half with a 36-28 lead.
The Lady Blazers scored the first basket of the second half, but once again Tulane made the first several minutes of their own. The Green Wave went on an 11-0 run to take a 47-30 lead with 15:53 left in the game.
UAB once again battled back and cut the lead to four on two separate occasions and to three, 61-58 with 5:05 left in the game. Tulane was able to answer every run with a basket to keep the Lady Blazers away.
Tulane shot 54 percent from the field for the game. They hit 25-of-38 free throws to UAB's making 11-of-19. The Green Wave also won the rebounding battle, 34-31.
Jackson was one of three Lady Blazers to foul out, joining Mia Thrash and Natasha Thomas. Three other UAB players finished the game with four fouls. The Lady Blazers were called for 30 fouls.
UAB did hold the Green Wave's two leading scorers, Janell Burse and Gwen Slaughter to a combined 17 points, 13 below their combined average. Burse, averaging 19 points, had nine and Slaughter, averaging 12, scored eight.
However, it was the outside tandem of Goree and Turnbull. Goree was 8-of-14 from the field and Turnbull was 5-of-6. Turnbull also added five assists.
This was the first loss at home for UAB after eight straight wins in Bartow Arena.
The Lady Blazers next play at South Florida, Friday night in Tampa.
