MILWAUKEE (AP)- Marquette set a single-game school record for 3-point percentage to defeat Tulane 82-57 in a Conference USA game Saturday afternoon.
Playing just 36 hours after the death of their beloved former coach Al McGuire, the Golden Eagles (10-7, 5-1) hit 12 of 15 3-pointers, or 80 percent.
Before the game, fans and players observed a moment of silence for McGuire, who died Friday morning following a lengthy illness caused by a rare blood disorder. Marquette players wore black circular patches with the letters AL on their left breast.
McGuire coached Marquette, then called the Warriors, to the 1977 NCAA championship and later became a well-known broadcaster.
The Golden Eagles pulled away with a 19-5 second-half run fueled by 3-pointers. Marquette led 51-41 when Brian Barone made a 3-pointer.
Odartey Blankson followed with another 3-pointer and Barone added a third. Scott Merritt made two free throws and then Barone connected on his fourth 3-pointer of the game to make it 65-46.
Brian Wardle led Marquette with 23 points. Barone added 17 and Blankson 16. Cordell Henry set a career high with 11 assists.
Tulane (7-12, 0-6) was led by Brandon Spann with 18 points. Marquette shot 54 percent in the first half and led 36-28 at the break.
It was the first time in nine games that the Golden Eagles led at halftime. Wardle had 13 points in the half as the Golden Eagles made 6 of 8 3-point shots.
