Teana McKiver scored 16 of her career-high 28 points in the second half to help hold off a Hampton rally, as the Tulane women's basketball team posted an 82-75 win over the Lady Pirates in the semifinals of the San Juan Shootout on Saturday.
With the win, Tulane (3-0) advances to Sunday's championships game, where the Green Wave will face Nebraska. The Cornhuskers advanced to the final with an 80-74 win over Northern Iowa in the first semifinal game. Hampton dropped to 1-2 with the loss.
Tulane held a 43-28 lead at halftime and used a 12-2 run at the beginning of the second stanza to build a 55-30 advantage with 15:53 left in the game. Hampton fought back, however, using a 17-0 run to pull to within eight, 55-47, at the 10:57 mark. The Green Wave answered with a short burst of its own to build a 60-47 advantage, but Hampton again refused to give in, trimming the TU lead to six, 64-58 at the 7:03 mark. The teams continued to trade points and Tulane led 76-69 with two minutes remaining when Hampton mounted its last charge. The Lady Pirates used a three-pointer and a free throw to cut the lead to just three, 78-75, but Sarah Goree hit four consecutive free throws inside the final 45 seconds to seal the win.
McKiver, a preseason All-Conference USA selection, recorded her first double-double of the season with 28 points and 12 rebounds, connecting on 11-of-12 shots from the floor. She also added two blocks and a steal. It marked the second time in Tulane's first three games that McKiver has established a new career high. She began the campaign with 27 points against High Point in the season-opener.
Gwen Slaughter posted a double-double for the third straight game, chipping in 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting and 11 rebounds. She also had two assists and two blocked shots. Sophomore Delacey Joseph scored in double figures for the second straight game, adding 14 points, three rebounds, four assists, one blocked shot and one steal.
Tulane raced out to an early lead, using an 11-0 run to turn a 6-5 deficit into a 16-6 advantage. Hampton rallied to trim the lead to three, 25-22, at the 7:46 mark, but the Green Wave turned in an 18-4 burst to claim a 43-26 lead before taking the 15-point cushion into the locker room.
The Green Wave forced Hampton into just 32.8 percent shooting for the game (22-of-67), but the Lady Pirates stayed close thanks to their prowess on the free throw line. Hampton connected on an impressive 25-of-28 free throws (89.3 percent), including an 18-of-20 performance in the second half.
Tulane hit 53.8 percent of its shots (28-of-52) from the floor and held a 42-34 edge in rebounding. The Wave also blocked a season-high eight shots, with McKiver, Slaughter and Kaisha Lymon recording two rejections each.
