NEW ORLEANS, La. - - The Tulane women's basketball team used a 23-3 run early in the second half to cruise to an 89-65 win over the Houston Jaguars in exhibition action at Fogelman Arena on Tuesday.
Junior Teana McKiver, a member of the preseason All-Conference USA team, led Tulane with 15 points, on 6-of-8 shooting, seven rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals in just 16 minutes of work. Senior Sarah Goree added 14 points and six rebounds, connecting on five of her seven shot attempts.
Tulane held a narrow 50-42 lead just 75 seconds into the second half before a Goree three-pointer ignited the burst. A conventional three-point play from Delacey Joseph and a lay-up from McKiver pushed Tulane's lead to 16 before the Jaguars answered with a three-pointer at the 16:52 mark. That would be Houston's last points for nearly six minutes, however, as Tulane used a 15-0 run to jump out to a 73-45 lead with 11:56 left. Five different Green Wave players scored during the run.
Houston would rally to pull within 15 with 5:23 left, but Tulane would use a 14-5 burst to end the game and claim the 24-point win. The Jaguars managed to stay in the game by connecting on 11 three-pointers.
"We played a much better second half," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton said. "In the first half, we played sluggishly, like we were nervous. In the second half, we had much better tempo. We still have some work to do, especially on defense, but overall, I am very pleased with how we improved in the second half."
Joseph, a sophomore guard from Donaldsonville, La., chipped in 11 points, six rebounds and a game-high six assists. Junior Britt Themann also scored in double figures, connecting on both of her three-point attempts as part of a 10-point effort.
Tulane jumped out to an early 8-1 lead before Houston cut the margin to three, 21-18, at the 10:04 mark. The teams traded baskets, and Tulane led 28-22, before the Wave used a 16-6 burst to build a 44-28 lead with 2:56 left. The Jaguars rallied, however, pulling to within 46-39 at the halftime break.
All 12 of Tulane's players played at least eight minutes, with 10 seeing at least 12 minutes of action. Newcomers Kaisha Lymon, a sophomore transfer from LSU, and Lakethia Hampton, a freshman from New Orleans, each came off the bench to score eight points, with Lymon adding seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Gwen Slaughter also had a solid all-around game, contributing seven points, 10 rebounds, five assists, three blocks and a steal in just 19 minutes of action.
Sophomore Kelly Nadeau, who earned a starting nod at point guard, scored six points while adding five assists, two steals and a blocked shot. Freshman guard Kinya Lennix also added six points, while Jessica Carroll and Salome Hector each had two points.
Tulane returns to action on Friday, as the Green Wave play host to cross-town rival Xavier of Louisiana in its final exhibition tune-up. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Fogelman Arena.
