Game Notes
Up Next:
The Tulane women's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday, as the Green Wave travel to face the Terriers of Boston University. Though the game is Tulane's sixth this season away from New Orleans, it is only Tulane's third true road game of the season. The Wave faced UPR-Mayaguez, Hampton and Nebraska on a neutral court at the San Juan Shootout before embarking on road trips to face last season's Missouri Valley Conference Co-Champs Southwest Missouri State and Drake in December. Oddly enough, it is the only game that the Green Wave will play in the Eastern time zone this season. With the exception of Wednesday's game, and the three games at the San Juan Shootout which were played in the Atlantic time zone, each of Tulane's regular season contests will be played in the Central time zone. Tulane enters the game with an 11-2 overall record and ranked 22nd in the latest ESPN/USA Today Coaches' and Associated Press polls.
Scouting Boston:
Boston enters Wednesday's game with a 7-3 record after having split their last four games. After dropping its season-opener to South Florida, the Terriers won five straight before a road loss to Baylor. Since then, the squad has sandwiched wins against Yale and Central Connecticut around a loss to St. Joseph's. Sophomore Katie Terhune is the only Boston player scoring in double figures, contributing 19.2 points per contest. However, three other Terriers are averaging at least 9.0 points per game. Ashley Carr leads the team with a 6.4 rebounds per game average. Boston also has six players pulling down at least 4.0 rebounds per game. Tulane posted a 110-66 victory in last season's game in New Orleans, the only meeting between the two schools. The Wave had three players - Janell Burse (20 p, 10 r), Gwen Slaughter (20 p, 10 r) and Teana McKiver (11 p, 13 r) - record double-doubles in that contest. The Wave also had a 56-22 edge in rebounding.
Last Time Out - Virginia:
Tulane won its 11 consecutive regular-season tournament title, posting a 74-63 win over Virginia to claim the DoubleTree Classic championship at Fogelman Arena on Saturday. Junior Teana McKiver earned tournament Most Valuable Player honors after scoring 18 points with 10 rebounds in the Championship game. She also had a double-double in the first-round game with Buffalo. It is McKiver's third tournament MVP trophy this year. Tulane (11-2) held a nine-point lead midway through the second half, but Virginia (7-5) chipped away, cutting the margin to three at 60-57 with 4:54 to go on a fast-break layup from Anna Prillamen. However, Delacey Joseph kicked off a 9-1 Green Wave run which put the game out of reach. After Joseph scored on an acrobatic runner in the lane, Gwen Slaughter was fouled after an offensive board and hit one free throw and then snagged another carom and put it back for two. That was followed by a Kelly Nadeau steal and breakaway layup, while a strong post-move by McKiver capped the run, making it 69-58 with 1:34 to go. The Cavaliers cut it to six with 1:01 to go, but the Wave connected on five-of-six free throws in the final minute to seal the victory, Tulane's 12th straight win in the DoubleTree Classic. Joining McKiver on the all-tournament team were Tulane teammates Slaughter and Joseph, as well as Virginia players Telisha Quarles and Brandi Teamer and Buffalo's Jessica Kochendorfer.
Third Time Is Still The Charm:
Junior Teana McKiver earned her third Most Valuable Player honor in as many tournaments this season when she was selected as the top player at the DoubleTree Classic. She had previously earned MVP accolades at the San Juan Shootout and the Tulane Invite this season.
McKiver Named Conference USA Player of the Week:
In addition to her Most Valuable Player honor, McKiver was selected as Conference USA's Player of the Week on Dec. 31. The junior averaged 17.0 points and 10.5 rebounds to lead the Green Wave to the DoubleTree Classic championship. She started the week with 16 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block against Buffalo before posting 18 points, 10 rebounds, two blocks and two steals against UVA. She joins Delacey Joseph, who was named C-USA Player of the Week on Dec. 10.
Movin' On Up:
Tulane is ranked 22nd in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' poll and 22nd in the latest Associated Press rankings. The Wave were 23rd in the coaches' poll and 25th in the AP poll last week.
