Tulane Baseball Sweeps Saturday's Doubleheader with Temple

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Tulane (6-0) baseball team scored a combined 30 runs in Saturday's doubleheader against Temple (0-2) as they defeated the Owls 12-2 and 18-1.
Tulane's 6-0 record is its best start since Head Coach Rick Jones took over the program in 1994.
In the final game of the set, Tulane scored a season high 18 runs, 10 in the bottom of the first inning alone, sweeping the Owls with an 18-1 win. The Wave out hit Temple 14 to six.
Steve Shirley was 2-for-2 with three RBI and drew four walks, while Jay Heintz was 3-for-3. Jake Gautreau hit the only home run of the day, a towering shot over the right field fence, as he went 3-for-4 and scored five runs in game two. Shirley, Heintz and Nick Bourgeois each drove in three Green Wave runs.
Andrew Corona (2-0) picked up his second win of the season. He went six innings scattered five hits and struck out six. Matt Foster, Steven Blades and Will Walter combined for three scoreless innings of relief.
The losing pitcher was Mike Caron (0-1) who gave up nine runs in just 2/3 of an inning.
In the early game, which was picked up in the bottom of the first inning after being suspended by rain Friday night, Tulane defeated Temple 12-2.
The Green Wave and Temple were knotted at one run each, until an eight-run fourth inning secured a Tulane win.
Shirley and Gautreau sent in a pair of Wave runs each.
The winning pitcher was Tulane starter Beau Richardson (1-0). He went six innings, gave up five hits, two runs and struck out six.
Jeff Rugg (0-1) got the loss for the Owls. He went 3 2/3 innings and gave up six runs.
Tulane's top four hitters, Gautreau (.667), Matt Groff (.500), Shirley (.412) and Heintz (.385), have posted one strikeout between the four of the through six games.
