MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis drew early fouls and exploded for a 23-3 run early in the first half as it cruised to a 91-64 victory over Tulane University in Conference USA men's basketball action on Saturday evening at The Pyramid.
Tulane (9-14, 2-8 C-USA) was led by senior Ledaryl Billingsley (Chicago, Ill.) and sophomore Brandon Brown (Houma, La.), who both scored 16 points. Billingsley picked up three first half fouls and was limited to just 21 minutes. He scored all of his points in the second half before fouling out. Brown also added a team-high eight rebounds in the loss. Sophomore Brandon Spann (New Orleans, La.) scored 12 points with five assists, while freshman Wayne Tinsley (Fontana, Calif.) had 11 points and six boards.
Tinsley and junior Linton Johnson (Chicago, Ill.) also picked up three first-half fouls.
Memphis (14-9, 8-2) trailed 4-3 early in the game, but used its 23-3 run to take command of the game with a 26-7 lead with 7:59 to go in the opening stanza. The Green Wave cut it to 13 on four occasions in the first half, but the Tigers pushed it to 17 at the break following back-to-back hoops from Kelly Wise (18 points).
The Tigers were led by Scooter McFadgon, who scored a game-high 19 points and hit all three of his three-point attempts. It was the 10th win in the last 11 games for Memphis, which leads Conference USA.
Tulane struggled to get in sync on offense as Memphis forced the ball out of Spann's hands throughout the game.
"They really did a good job of taking our offense away from us," Tulane head coach Shawn Finney said. "If you don't get going on offense, it's tough to get it done defensively."
The Wave shot just 40.0 percent from the field, while Memphis converted 54.4 percent of its shots. The Tigers also held a 41-32 edge on the glass. Tulane committed 15 turnovers (11 of those in the first half), while forcing 12.
The Green Wave returns to the New Orleans Arena Wednesday night, hosting Conference USA foe Charlotte at 7 p.m. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster or by calling 504-961-WAVE.
