NEW ORLEANS, La.-- Strong Pepperdine (8-1) pitching held Tulane (9-2) to eight hits as they went on to defeat the Green Wave 9-1 on Sunday afternoon.
The Waves took an early 1-0 lead but the Green Wave quickly evened up the score in the second inning as Matt Groff hit a lead off triple, extending his current hitting streak to 11 games, and then scored on a Michael Aubrey double. That was the only run Tulane would score all afternoon.
Pepperdine went on to score three in the fifth inning on a Jared Pitney home run and three in the sixth on a bases-clearing Woody Cliffords double. Daniel Haren homered in the seventh and sent in a run in the eighth to give Pepperdine a 9-1 win. He was 4-for-5 on the afternoon with a pair of RBI.
Tulane's Jake Gautreau, James Burgess and Groff all went 2-for-4 but it wasn't enough to give Tulane the momentum they needed.
Pepperdine's Pitney posted a games high four RBI.
The winning pitcher was Noah Lowry, who went a strong seven innings, gave up eight hits and one run.
Tulane's Andrew Corona (2-1) got the loss. He went 4 2/3 innings and gave up four runs. Dirck Hoagland and Chris Searle gave Tulane a combined 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
