LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Strong UCLA (10-4) pitching held the Green Wave to just one hit as the Bruins went on to defeat Tulane (10-3) 8-3 on Friday evening.
Tulane was out hit 9-2 with their only hits coming from Mike VanDaele and James Burgess.
"We didn't swing the bats well and we didn't throw strikes out of the bullpen," Tulane coach Rick Jones said. "Bourgeois pitched well and that was encouraging."
Costly errors hurt the Bruins in the fourth as Jake Gautreau reached base and scored Tulane's first run on an error by UCLA's second baseman Rashad Parker. Mike VanDaele pinch-hit a two-run single into left giving the Wave a 3-0 lead. The hit was his first of the season.
UCLA answered in the sixth with six runs driven in by Brian Baron, Casey Grzecka and John Canales.
Starting pitcher Nick Bourgeois (0-1) gave a solid performance but ran out of steam in the sixth as he left the game with the bases loaded and no outs. Andrew Corona relieved Bourgeois and lasted only 1/3 an inning. Freshman Joey Charron pitched the final 2/3 innings, giving up one hit and striking out one. On the evening, Charron went 2 2/3 gave up four hits and two runs while striking out three.
UCLA added two final runs in the seventh.
Bruins' starting pitcher Josh Karp (2-0) went six innings, gave up one hit, no earned runs and struck out eight.
Due to inclimate weather expected on Sunday, the teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, February 24. The games are scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. (CST). Both games will be broadcast locally on 88.3 FM WRBH and on the internet at www.TulaneGreenWave.com.
