Tulane Baseball Edges Southern Miss 6-4

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - An aggressive Tulane (33-8, 11-5 C-USA) offense, led by Andy Cannizaro, propelled the Green Wave past Southern Miss (20-22, 6-10 C-USA) 6-4 on Friday evening.
Tulane had a strong start as the Green Wave put up two runs in the first. RBI singles by Cannizaro and James Jurries gave TU a 2-0 lead. Cannizaro continues to impress. On the evening he was 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two RBI and one run scored.
In the fourth inning, Steve Shirley drew a lead off walk and Matt Groff hit his third home run of the season, extending the Green Wave?s lead to 4-0.
Southern Miss answered in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs driven in by an Allen Winningham home run into left.
The Green Wave added one run in the fifth and seventh innings.
With two outs in the fifth, Cannizaro reached on a double. Jake Gautreau recorded his only hit of the game, and RBI single down the leftfield line.
Cannizaro hit his second two-out double of the evening in the seventh, this time sending Anthony Giarratano to the pay station and giving Tulane a 6-2 advantage.
Green Wave starting pitcher Matt Foster ran into a little trouble in the bottom of the inning. Joey Charron entered the game with two outs and helped out Foster by striking out Darren Welch to get the Wave into the eighth.
Foster (8-3) went 6 2/3 innings en route to his eighth win of the season. He gave up seven hits, four runs and struck out two. Charron contributed 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief with five strikeouts.
The losing pitcher was Shea Douglas (4-3) who went 7 2/3 innings gave up six runs, four earned, and struck out seven.
The teams play game two at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 21.
