NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Tulane Baseball team ranked sixth in the nation in overall attendance during the 2001 season, according to the NCAA's post baseball season report.
The Green Wave had 127,670 fans show up throughout the season to watch Tulane win its fourth Conference USA in the past six seasons, and advance to the College World Series for the first time in school history. By averaging 2,660 fans per game, Tulane also ranked 15th nationally in average home attendance.
"History has proven that home teams have a distinct advantage in NCAA play," Tulane head baseball coach Rick Jones said. "No year was this more evident than in 2001 as 15 of 16 Regional hosts advanced and seven of eight Super Regional host teams advanced to the College World Series. This past year was one of many firsts for our program, and I appreciate our fans us that much needed edge."
Tulane had an attendance of 2,000 or more on 10 occasions in games played at Turchin Stadium during the regular season, and packed in 11,669 fans on April 11 when the Green Wave hosted LSU at Zephyr Field. During the 2001 FedEx Conference USA Tournament at Turchin Stadium, the Green Wave had three 3,000-plus fan games, including 3,472 in the championship game when the home team defeated South Florida, 21-4, to earn the league's automatic bid the NCAA Regionals.
In the Regionals, also hosted at Turchin Stadium, the Green Wave had 10,380 fans watch as Tulane won the Regional Championship and advance to the Super Regionals where they would face in-state rival LSU.
During the 2001 NCAA Super Regional held at Zephyr Field, Tulane claimed the highest attendance of any of the Super Regional sites, averaging 11,756 fans per game in the 2-1 series victory over the Tigers to earn the school's first-ever College Worlds Series berth. The Green Wave's average attendance was more than the totals of six of the other seven Super Regional sites. The three crowds were also the three largest ever to see a Super Regional game, topping the previous record of 7,667 set at LSU's Alex Box Stadium on June, 3, 2000.
