Women's Cross Country Wins Tulane Invitational

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Tulane University women's cross country team won the 2001 Tulane Invitational at Levee Oaks Park Friday. The men's race was won by Alabama, followed by the Green Wave.
The Wave also had both individual winners. Sophomore Eva Lustigova (Liberec, Czech Republic) covered the two-mile course in 11:42.20 for the women, while senior Solomon Kandie (Nairobi, Kenya) completed the three-mile men's race in 14:33.30.
The Tulane women won the event with 69 points, followed by Alabama (74 points), LSU (78), Southern Miss (80). The field was rounded out by New Orleans (137), Ole Miss (162), Jackson State (188), Xavier (197), Mobile (200), Loyola (228) and Southeastern (271).
Following Lustigova for the Wave was senior Katrina Gemmell (Palmerston North, New Zealand), who took second place and senior Lyndie Galka (Fort Stewart, Ga.) in seventh place. UNO had both the third and fourth place finishes with Pavlina Vondrkova and Sarah Meza, while LSU's Lindsay Daigle finished fifth.
For the men, Alabama tallied 32 points for first place, followed by the Wave with 45 points and LSU with 58. Ole Miss (105) and Xavier (165) rounded out the top five, followed by Jackson State (167), New Orleans (189) and Southeastern (194). Loyola and Mobile did not have five finishers.
The Tulane men also took the top two places individually as senior Meshack Mulupi (Kilimambogo, Kenya) followed Kandie for second place. Junior Anthony Lagat (Eldama-Ravine, Kenya) earned sixth place for the Wave. Alabama snagged third, fifth, seventh, eighth and ninth, led by Japheth Koech. LSU's Ryan Rainford finished in fourth place.
In last year's contest, Alabama won both the men's and women's races.
Tulane returns to action Sept. 22 at the Cajun Classic in Lafayette.
