NEW ORLEANS, La. - -
Senior Teana McKiver scored 19 points and had nine rebounds to lead the Tulane women's basketball team to an 81-56 win over the Houston Jaguars at Fogelman Arena on Sunday.
McKiver connected on 7-of-12 shots from the floor and added a pair of blocked shots and a pair of steals. The Green Wave also used a 13-0 run to start the second half, building a 30-point lead with 16:50 left in the game.
"It was a good game in the sense that we got try a lot of different things and have some different line-ups on the floor," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton said. "I think the players enjoyed the game today. We tried to distribute the minutes so that everyone could get plenty of playing time."
The Green Wave forced four straight turnovers to start the second half, pushing its 43-26 halftime lead to 56-26 early in the second frame. McKiver had five points during the burst, while Tymeka Moore had a lay-up and a pair of steals. Houston made a run and cut the lead to just 15 midway through the second half, but Tulane slowly pushed its lead back to 28 with only a minute remaning.
Junior transfer Muci Haris, playing her first game for the Green Wave after sitting out last season, had 11 points and two steals, while junior Kelly Nadeau added 11 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals. Senior Gwen Slaughter chipped in 10 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Tulane had a 56-44 edge in rebounding, grabbing 24 offensive boards. Tulane forced 25 Jaguar turnovers, while committing only 15 miscues. The Wave was also 20-of-28 from the free throw line.
"I was pleased with our free throw percentage and our low number of turnovers, especially considering how early in the season it is. We had some players playing out of position, but everyone got a lot of work in, which was nice."
Tulane will play host to cross-town rival Xavier next Sunday, Nov. 17, in its final exhibition of the preseason. The Green Wave open the regular season on the road against James Madison on Friday, Nov. 22.
