NEW ORLEANS, La. - -
Tulane 86, Southeastern Louisiana 43 - Box Score
Britt Themann took care of the outside, Teana McKiver took care of the inside and Delacey Joseph handled the mid-range game as the Green Wave cruised to an 86-43 win over in-state rival Southeastern Louisiana at Fogelman Arena on Thursday.
Tulane, playing its first game after a 10-day break for semester exams, improved to 5-2 overall. Southeastern dropped to 1-6 with the loss.
Themann led all scorers with 16 points thanks to a 4-of-9 showing from behind the three-point line. McKiver was 7-of-9 from the floor, chipping in 15 points, five rebounds and tying her career high with four assists. Joseph added 14 points thanks to her mid-range pull-up jumper.
"We shot the ball well as a team tonight," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton said. "Teana was playing well down low, which forced them to collapse their defense. She had some great passes out to the perimeter and Britt was able to knock down some open looks. When their defense rotated into help, Delacey did a great job attacking the basket and hitting a pull-up jumper. It is nice to see the team play well against different defenses."
Tulane had a 17-9 lead before using an 11-0 burst to build a 19-point cushion. McKiver started the run with a jumper in the lane and then drew a double-team before passing out for a Themann three-pointer to give Tulane a 22-9 edge. Lakethia Hampton added a fast-break lay-up and Tiffany Wilson hit a jumper to push the lead to give the Wave a 17-point margin. McKiver closed out the run with a lay-up off an offensive rebound to push the Wave's advantage to 28-9. Southeastern got as close as 15, but the Wave followed with a 13-2 burst to push the margin to 26 with 4:16 left in the first half.
The Wave opened the second half with another 13-2 burst to claim a 59-25 lead at the 15:27 mark. With the Wave reserves in for much of the second half, the teams traded baskets before Tulane closed the game with an 11-2 run to seal the 43-point victory.
"I thought we played very hard and aggressively on defense," Stockton said. "We could've been more patient on offense and I would have liked to see us shoot better from the free throw line. But when you are coming off a long break like we were, you just want to see if you can maintain your intensity for 40 mintues and I think we did that tonight for the most part."
Tulane connected on 54.3 percent of its shots (38-of-70) and was 7-of-17 from behind the three-point line (41.2 percent). Southeastern was just 17-of-52 from the floor (32.7 percent), including a 2-of-18 showing from behind the arc (11.1 percent). The Wave had a 46-30 edge in rebounding and forced 24 Southeastern turnovers which resulted in 24 Tulane points.
Thanks in part to Themann's 16, Tulane got 38 points from its bench, compared to the 14 scored by the Southeastern reserves. "It was nice to be able to play a lot of players a lot of minutes tonight," Stockton added as only two Wave players saw more than 20 minutes of action. Joseph had 22 minutes of work, while McKiver played 21 minutes.
Tulane returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 22, when the Green Wave travel to face Arkansas State in Jonesboro, Ark.
