NEW ORLEANS, La. - - Senior forward Gwen Slaughter has been named the Conference USA Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Slaughter earned the award after leading Tulane to a 74-61 win over Drake last Monday. She tied her career highs with 20 points and five blocked shots, while also adding 16 rebounds and four steals - both just one off of her career bests in those categories. Drake reached the Sweet 16 in last season's NCAA Tournament.
"Gwen definitely deseves this accolade," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton said. "She had a great game against Drake last week. She had been in a bit of a slump, but really worked hard to get herself out of it. She just wanted to help her teammates any way she could."
It marks the first Player of the Week award for Slaughter, and Tulane's first of the season. As a program, Tulahe has now had six different players earn Player of the Week honors in the last four seasons, including current players Teana McKiver and Delacey Joseph, who both picked up the award last year.
Tulane (4-2) returns to action on Thursday, as the Green Wave close out a four-game homestand against Southeastern Louisiana. It will be Tulane's first game since the Dec. 9 meeting with Drake, as the Wave are currently in the midst of semester exams.
