BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Senior Solomon Kandie paced Tulane with a second-place finish in the one-mile run and a fifth-place showing in the 3,000, but the Green Wave finished eighth at the 2002 Conference USA Indoor Track & Field Championships which concluded in Bloomington, Ind. Saturday.
The Tulane men finished the meet with 39 points while first-year C-USA member TCU claimed the men's title with 133 points. The Horned Frogs were followed by Charlotte (120.5 points), Houston (84.5) and East Carolina in the team standings.
The Green Wave women took 10th place in the meet, which was won by Houston with 107 points. South Florida (89.5 points) was second, Marquette (77.5) third and East Carolina (66) fourth in the women's competition. Tulane, with 28.5 points, was just 1.5 points behind ninth-place Southern Miss (30).
Freshman Helmi Leppanen and senior Katrina Gemmell had the top performances for Tulane's women as Leppanen took third place in the shot put with a throw of 48-00.50 and Gemmell was fourth in the one-mile run in a time of 4:54.46. Other top finishes for the Green Wave Saturday were turned in by Carlyne Pradieu, who was fifth in the 800 meters in a time of 2:16.18, and Angel Dooley and Asha James, who were seventh in the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes, respectively.
Tulane took second and third place in the men's one-mile run as freshman Philip Aagaard took third place behind Kandie in a time of 4:13.28. Sophomore Joshua Johnson also recorded a third place finish with a mark of 50-00.75 in the triple jump. Kandie picked up 12 points for the Wave with his second and fifth place finishes. He also ran a leg on Tulane's winning distance medley relay Friday.
Tulane will next be in action Friday, March 1 at the Last Chance Meet in Baton Rouge, La.
