NEW ORLEANS - Nationally-ranked baseball powers Tulane and LSU - who met in a record-breaking Super Regional last year - will play in the Louisiana Superdome on April 10, 2002 at 7 p.m., with an eye on breaking the national collegiate baseball attendance record. The game had been scheduled for Tuesday, April 9, 2002 at Zephyr Field.
The national collegiate baseball attendance record for a regular season game of 21,043 was set March 4, 1996 by TCU and Texas at the Ballpark at Arlington in Arlington, Texas. A two-game session between Miami and Alabama and Rice and Oklahoma State at the 1999 College World Series in Omaha, Neb., saw the largest overall crowd (regular season or postseason) for a college baseball game as 24,859 fans packed into Rosenblatt Stadium.
The largest crowd to see a collegiate baseball game in Louisiana was recorded on Feb. 25, 1996, as 13,695 fans attended a tripleheader of games featuring Tulane, UNO and LSU in the Louisiana Superdome during the Winn Dixie Showdown. That figure also ranks as the largest crowd in Tulane history.
"There is obviously a tremendous amount of interest in this game," said Tulane Athletics Director Rick Dickson. "Using the Superdome as the venue for this match-up presents more fans of both schools with the opportunity to see these outstanding teams, and will provide a showcase for college baseball in Louisiana."
"We're excited about possibly being part of a college baseball attendance record at the Superdome," said LSU Director of Athletics Skip Bertman. "It's a wonderful opportunity for Louisiana baseball and Louisiana baseball fans."
Bertman added that ticket incentives make the move even more attractive, as both Tulane and LSU will benefit as more tickets are sold.
Tulane and LSU smashed the NCAA regional attendance records both for one-game (11,870) and for a three-game series (35,268) at last year's Super Regional at Zephyr Field. The regular season games between Tulane and LSU at Zephyr Field have sold out in each of the last four seasons with an average attendance of 11,047.
"Zephyr Field has been a great home for the Tulane-LSU game and has certainly been a key factor in the growth of the event," Dickson said. "The extremely high ticket demand for this game, coupled with the increase in our season ticket base this year, and the potential to break the all-time collegiate record, led us to the decision to move the game to the Superdome."
The head coaches from both schools expressed enthusiasm about a potentially record-breaking game.
"Our game with LSU in New Orleans has grown into an event that is unmatched in college baseball," said Tulane Head Coach Rick Jones. "It's exciting to think about the potential to attract the largest crowd in the history of college baseball in the country's most famous domed stadium."
"We're excited about the opportunity to play in the Dome and have a chance to set an attendance record," said LSU Head Coach Smoke Laval. "It should be a great event for the fans and players of both schools."
Individual tickets are priced at $15 and $12 for adult reserved seats, and $6 for adult general admission (outfield). Youth tickets are available for $8 (reserved) and $4 general admission.
