NEW ORLEANS, La. - After tallying a career-high 15 strikeouts Friday night at Memphis, junior southpaw Nick Bourgeois was named Conference USA co-Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
Bourgeois (5-1), who set a personal-best of 10 strikeouts earlier this season against Rutgers, was dominant throughout the 7-0 win over the Tigers as he gave up just four hits and one walk while not allowing more than one base runner in any of his eight inning on the hill.
He allowed just one runner past second base all night, and his lone walk of the contest came with two outs in the eighth. Bourgeois kept Memphis guessing throughout his performance as eight of his punchouts were called third strikes.
The weekly honor was the first of Bourgeois' career and first for the Green Wave since May 7, 2001 when Barth Melius was named C-USA co-Pitcher of the Week.
For the season, Bourgeous leads Tulane with a career-high 69 strikeouts, paces the squad with a .209 opponent batting average and ranks second on the team in victories. His 32 strikeouts looking leads Conference USA and he ranks second in total strikeouts, fourth in opponent batting average and innings pitched, and ranks ninth in ERA.
Bourgeois shared the weekly honor with Saint Louis' Corey Lawson who struck out 11 in a complete-game victory over UAB on Saturday. Darryl Lawhorn of East Carolina rounded out the league's weekly honors, earning C-USA Hitter of the Week after going 7-fo-10 with two doubles, five RBI and four runs scored last week for the Pirates.
Bourgeois and the Green Wave return to action on Wednesday, April 10 when Tulane looks to break the NCAA single-game attendance mark against arch-rival LSU in the Louisiana Superdome. For ticket information, call the Tulane Athletic Ticket Office at (504) 861-WAVE.
