AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn's Natasha Brackett hit a three-pointer with no time left on the clock to tie the game at 57 at the end of regulation and the Tigers outscored Tulane 18-7 in the extra period to claim a 75-64 victory over the Green Wave at Beard-Eaves Coliseum Sunday. The loss dropped Tulane's record to 8-4 on the season while Auburn improved its record to 12-1.
Tulane led throughout the second half until Brackett's three-pointer, which came with Tulane guarding the three-point line. The Green Wave led 57-49 before Auburn stormed back, closing the gap to 57-54 on a basket by Brackett. The final 2:27 were scoreless until Brackett's last second three tied it up.
"I told the team that we beat them for 39:59 and then they hit a tough shot at the end of regulation and that really took the wind out of our sails," said head coach Lisa Stockton. "There were a couple of plays that I wish we had back, but it doesn't come down to one play. We played fatigued in the last 10 minutes and our offense went stagnant."
Teana McKiver led Tulane with her third double-double of the season as the senior scored 18 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. She hit 8-of-9 attempts from the field despite being double and triple teamed down low most of the game. Britt Themann added 13 points for the Wave.
Themann hit three three-pointers to lead Tulane in the first half as the Wave knocked down 6-of-14 shots from three-point range in the opening stanza. Tulane also shot 53 percent from the field overall in the opening half. But the Wave was just 1-of-9 on threes in the second stanza.
Auburn was led by Brackett who scored 14 first-half points on her way to a game-high 24 on 9-of-20 shooting. Le'Coe Willingham added 14 points and 14 rebounds, while Mandisa Stevenson had 11 points. The Tigers out-rebounded the Wave 55-46 for the game and shot 25 free throws to just 10 by Tulane, with the Green Wave hitting just three from the charity stripe.
"We need to hit our free throws when we get there," Stockton said. "And we've got to get there more and not let our opponents get there as much."
Tulane opens Conference USA play versus Southern Miss in Fogelman Arena Saturday at 2 p.m. Tickets are available by calling 504-861-WAVE.
