Tulane 70, Xavier 52 - Box Score
Senior Delacey Joseph had 16 points, while junior Lakethia Hampton had 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Tulane women's basketball team to a 70-52 win over Xavier in an exhibition contest at Fogelman Arena on Sunday.
The contest was Tulane's second and final exhibition of the 2003-04 campaign, as the Green Wave kick-off the regular season next Friday with a game against in-state rival UL Monroe.
Tulane raced out to a 39-22 halftime lead, holding the Gold Nuggets to just six first-half field goals. The teams traded baskets to start the game, and the score was tied at 9-9 at the 15:29 mark before Tiffany Wilson hit a driving lay-up to start a 8-0 Tulane run. Xavier scored on a lay-up of its own to pull within six, but Tulane scored the next five points to push its lead to 11 and the Gold Nuggets would get no closer than eight the rest of the way.
After taking the 17-point lead into the locker room, Tulane outscored Xavier 9-2 to start the second frame to build a 24-point cushion. Xavier turned up the full-court pressure midway through the second half to try to creep back into the contest , cutting the lead to 17, but the Wave answered the Gold Nuggets each time to claim the 18-point win.
"I think this is a team where everyone has to contribute, which is something you saw today," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton said. "We are rebounding the ball pretty well, which is encouraging to see, especially for a team that is as small as we are."
Tulane essentially played the second half without a true point guard after starter Kelly Nadeau was forced to the sideline with a cut on her forehead. Reserve point guard D'Aundra Henry was limited to just one minute in the opening stanza due to a minor injury.
"It was a challenge not having a point guard, but I thought the team handled the situation well," Stockton added.
Tulane finished the game connecting on 46.9 percent of its shots (23-of-49), while holding Xavier to just 31.0 percent shooting (18-of-58). The Wave also had a 42-40 edge in rebounding and forced 21 Gold Nugget turnovers. The Wave also had 11 steals, with four coming from Tymeka Moore.
Moore added 10 points and eight rebounds for the Green Wave, while Nadeau had nine points and four assists in just 18 minutes of work. Jackie Tucker and Courtney Williams each had 11 points to pace Xavier.
Tulane begins the 2003-04 regular season next Friday, as the Wave travel to face UL Monroe. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
