NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane University held the Houston Jaguars to 20 percent shooting in the second half as the Green Wave pulled away for a 78-50 victory in its women's basketball exhibition opener on Thursday evening at Fogelman Arena.
The Green Wave was led by senior Delacey Joseph, who tallied a game-high 17 points to go with six rebounds and four assists. Junior transfer Natalie Walsh, making her Tulane debut, tallied 14 points, including three three-pointers. Junior Lakethia Hampton added nine points and nine rebounds. Tulane played 11 different players, each of whom logged at least 12 minutes of action.
"I think we came out really intense, especially early," Tulane coach Lisa Stockton said. "I was pleased with the pace we set. It was one of the best early exhibitions we've played. We had some players that haven't been really counted on before play well. We played with a lot of confidence."
Tulane held a 37-26 advantage at the half, but used tough defense to open the second half, holding the Jaguars without a field goal for the first 12:17 of the stanza, building a 61-33 advantage before Houston could connect. The Jaguars missed their first 14 shots of the second half while Tulane forced nine turnovers and connected on 9-of-21 shots.
The Wave shot 44.1 percent (30-of-68) from the field for the game, while Houston finished with just 28.3 percent shooting (15-of-53). Tulane also held a commanding 46-34 advantage on the boards, including 19 offensive rebounds. The Wave committed 17 turnovers while forcing 25.
"Our goal was to out-rebound them, which we did," Stockton said. "So I'm pleased with that, especially with a smaller team (than what we are used to). The 17 turnovers has to be a record for us in an exhibition game."
Tulane opened the scoring on a layup from Tymeka Moore (nine points, six rebounds) and the Jaguars quickly tied it up. However, layups from Joseph and Hampton gave the Wave the lead for good. A Joseph three-point play tipped off a 15-3 run capped by a Walsh three-pointer which made it 23-7 with 11:36 to go in the first half. The Jaguars closed the opening stanza with a 13-7 to pull within 11 at the break.
The Green Wave returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 16 with another exhibition game against local rival Xavier University. Game time is 2 p.m.
