LSU used a 17-5 run midway through the second half to ease open a close game en route to a 65-42 win over the Tulane women's basketball team at the New Orleans Arena on Tuesday.
LSU won its 10th straight to improve to 11-2 on the season, while Tulane drops to 5-6 with the loss.
LSU took a 35-27 lead into the locker room, and the teams traded baskets for much of the second half before the Tigers' decisive run. Tulane trailed 39-32 at the 15:11 mark, but got only a D'Aundra Henry free throw and a pair of baskets from Cashmir White over the next 10 minutes as LSU built a 37-56 lead. Tulane tried to rally, cutting the LSU lead to 16, but just couldn't overcome the deficit as LSU pulled away down the stretch.
Sophomore Seimone Augustus led LSU with 18 points and six rebounds, while Doneeka Hodges added 16 points and seven assists. Tymeka Moore led Tulane with 10 points, while Lakethia Hampton added a game-high 12 rebounds for the Green Wave.
Tulane came out firing early, jumping out to a 7-2 lead. Hampton scored the first basket of the game for Tulane and LSU answered with a jumper from Johnson. Delacey Joseph put the Wave up three with a long three-pointer before Tiffany Wilson added a baseline jumper to give Tulane the five-point cushion. But LSU fought back with 16 straight points to take build an 11-point lead en route to an eight-point lead at the break.
"I think we can be a very good team when we score from the free throw line and we rebound, but we didn't do either one well tonight," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton said. "I think we fought hard, but there were times we couldn't get our offenses on track."
Tulane held LSU to just 40.9 percent shooting (27-of-66), almost ten percentage points below their season average, but could only manage 32.7 percent shooting themselves (16-of-49). The Tigers used a significant height advantage on the glass to claim a 46-34 edge in rebounding. Tulane was just 8-of-19 from the free throw line and 2-of-13 from the three-point line.
Tulane returns to action on Monday, January 5, as the Green Wave travel to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
