BERKELEY, Calif. - -
Tulane 62, Wichita State 59 - Final Box Score
Senior Delacey Joseph hit a long three-pointer with six-tenths of a second left on the clock to give the Tulane women's basketball team a 62-59 win over Wichita State in the first round of the Oakland Tribune Classic at Cal's Haas Pavilion on Saturday.
The Green Wave snapped a two-game losing streak to improve to 2-3 overall, while Wichita State lost for the first time in three games to fall to 2-2.
Joseph scored 12 of the Green Wave's final 15 points and finished with 16 for the game. Junior Tymeka Moore also had a great outing for the Wave, recording her first career double-double with a career-best 11 points and 11 rebounds.
"Coming into this tournament, I really feel like we needed a boost as a team," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton said. "This was a great team win with a lot of players stepping up and contributing. Tymeka (Moore) played a tremendous game tonight and I thought Jami (Montagnino) gave us a lot of quality minutes. Delacey took a good shot at the end and just drained it."
Wichita State led 55-51 with 3:42 left before Tulane clawed their way back. Joseph scored on an old-fashioned three-point play to pull the Wave to within one before hitting a jumper in the lane with 2:16 left to give Tulane a 56-55 lead. The teams traded misses before a steal by Moore gave the Wave the ball back with 46 seconds left. Lakethia Hampton was fouled and hit both free throws to push the Wave's advantage to three before Angela Bucker added two free throws of her own to bring the Shockers to within one.
On the Wave's following possession, Montagnino hit one of two free throws to give Tulane a two-point lead with 26 seconds left. Carlessa Dennis followed with a basket to tie the game for Wichita State, but her basket left Tulane 14 seconds and set Joseph up for her game-winning basket.
Hampton added 14 points for the Green Wave, while senior Kelly Nadeau had 10 points, four assists and seven steals. Montagnino, who scored her first career points in the first half, finished with seven points for Tulane.
Tulane forced 30 Wichita State turnovers, turning them into 24 points. The Wave also held the Shockers to just 34.6 percent shooting in the second half (9-of-26), including an 0-of-4 showing from behind the three-point arc. The contest featured eight ties and 16 lead changes.
Tulane returns to action on Sunday in the championship game of the Oakland Tribune Classic and will face either Miami of Ohio or host California. If Miami wins its match-up with Cal, the championship game will be at 3 p.m. CST. If Cal wins, the championship game will be at 5 p.m. CST.
