NEW ORLEANS - Tulane placed 92 student-athletes on the Conference USA Honor Roll for 2002-03 while 42 percent of Green Wave team members posted a 3.0 or higher grade point average in the Spring 2003 semester to earn Tulane "Scholar-Athlete" recognition, highlighting the most recent academic achievements for Tulane student-athletes and reinforcing the University's commitment to a model athletics program.
Of the 92 Tulane students on the C-USA Academic Honor Roll, 16 earned the prestigious Commissioner's Academic Medal indicative of a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or above. To make the Academic Honor Roll, student-athletes must post a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.00 on a 4.00 scale for that academic year.
A total of 16 Tulane baseball players were named to the C-USA Academic Honor Roll, followed closely by 13 football players and 11 women's soccer players. The women's golf team placed seven of its eight team members on the C-USA Academic Honor Roll. The men's golf and women's track and field programs each had three Academic Medal winners, while the baseball, women's basketball, women's soccer and women's tennis team each had two Academic Medal recipients.
In addition, women's basketball standout Britt Themann was one of just six student-athletes from across Conference USA to earn one of the league's $4,000 Postgraduate Scholarships. Themann, who recently graduated with a degree in exercise sport science and was a finalist for the prestigious NCAA Walter Byers Scholarship, completed her basketball career as the Green Wave's all-time leader in three-point field goal percentage. She earned the Commissioner's Academic Medal for the fourth straight year in addition to the scholarship award.
While the C-USA awards encompassed the entire academic year, Tulane University student-athletes completed another impressive semester in May as the 280 students combined to post a grade-point average of 2.98 in the spring. One hundred eighteen (118) student-athletes posted a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher, with 43 of that group (15 percent) qualifying for the Dean's List. Five Green Wave athletes recorded perfect 4.0's.
The Tulane men's golf team had an especially impressive outing in the spring as Tom Shaw's squad compiled a 3.56 g.p.a. for the spring, raising its cumulative average to 3.33, also the top mark among Wave teams. Other Tulane teams with g.p.a.'s over 3.0 were women's golf (3.21), women's soccer (3.25), women's tennis (3.11), women's track and field (3.10) and volleyball (3.10).
"We believe in success in the classroom, in addition to on the course," Shaw said. "I am proud of our team's academic success, but even more proud to be a part of an athletic department which excels academically in all sports."
Shaw's team also led the department in the perfect 4.0 category as both Justin Adendorff and Jeff Osborn were flawless academically in the spring. In addition, Alycia Wanat (women's soccer), Lucy Wood (women's tennis) and Ellen Vollmers (women's track) recorded 4.0's.
"These academic accomplishments are indicative of the high quality of student-athletes who attend Tulane," athletic director Rick Dickson said. "They excel both in the classroom and on the playing field and are ideal representatives of Tulane."
